Chris Rock’s controversial monologue on SNL: funny or disrespectful?

Chris Rock visited his old stomping grounds to host this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live. Sometimes I forget that he’s not simply the guy who voices a zebra in the Madagascar movies. His SNL monologue reminded me that he’s a devastating comedian. There were no musical numbers in Rock’s monologue. No cute little guitar. This was simply Rock doing some old-fashioned, stand-up comedy.

Dustin Rowles of Pajiba says the rest of the episode wasn’t great, so this monologue was one of the highlights. Rock covers a lot of ground in these 8 minutes. He touches on the terrorist bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon, the 9/11 attacks, and the Freedom Tower. Some of what he says is shocking, but his point revolves around the inevitable commercialism of anniversaries and holidays. Rock starts out by mentioning Sunday’s NYC marathon. Then this happened:

“That Boston Marathon was scary, because I love Boston. I love the people there, but that was probably the most frightening, sadistic terrorist attack ever. Just think about it – 26 miles! 26 miles is a long drive. People jogging for 26 miles, their knees are hurting, their feet are killing them, if you’re a woman, there’s blood coming out your t—ies. You’ve been training for a year, you finally get to the finish line, and somebody screams, ‘RUN!’

“The good people of Boston bounced back, and New York will bounce back. We had our own terrorist attack. Now we’ve got the Freedom Tower. They should change the name from the Freedom Tower to the ‘Never Going in There Tower,’ ’cause I’m never going in there. There is no circumstance that will ever get me in that building. Does this building duck? What are they thinking? Who’s the corporate sponsor, Target? Stop it. They put another skyscraper in the same spot? What kind of arrogant, Floyd Mayweather crap is this? What businesses are they going to put in the Freedom Tower? They better put some mandatory stuff in there. If they put a Sunglass Hut in there, it’s gonna be empty. I got robbed on 48th and 8th about 20 years ago, I have not been back to 48th and 8th. I am never going in the Freedom Tower. I don’t care if Scarlett Johannson is butt-naked on the 89th floor in a plate of ribs.”

“Hey, hey I’m not joking about 9/11, but we live in America and in America there are no sacred days because we commercialize everything. We’re only 5 years away from 9/11 sales. You’re gonna hear it on the radio: ‘Come on down to Red Lobster. These shrimp are $9.11.’ It doesn’t matter what the holiday is. Martin Luther King Day. It’s gonna be the same like, “These Toyotas are free at last, free at last!’ ‘It’s MLK birthday. Madea’s got a dream!’ We commercialize everything. Look at Christmas. Jesus’ birthday. Now I don’t know Jesus, but from what I’ve heard, Jesus is the least materialistic person to ever roam the Earth. No bling on Jesus. Jesus kept a low profile, and we turned his birthday into the most materialistic day of the year. It’s a whole season of materialism. And at the end, we have the nerve to have an economist come on tv and tell us how horrible the Jesus birthday season was this year.”

[From NBC – Saturday Night Live]

Rock moved onto the topic of gun control and celebrity involvement in charity. That part wasn’t too funny, but the rest? Rock’s routine reminded me of the late, great Richard Pryor. Yes, it was surprising that Rock mentioned these topics, but he didn’t say anything disrespectful towards victims. He intended to hold up a mirror to our society’s holiday commercialism, and that’s what he did.

Cast member Pete Davidson, whose firefighter father died on 9/11, tweeted his approval of Rock’s monologue.

Oh, and here’s Prince’s performance. He played for eight minutes with his newish band, 3RDEYEGIRL.

Here’s a backstage pic of Chris Rock jamming to Prince tunes before the show.

Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev: Not Speaking on The Vampire Diaries, Nikki Reed to Blame?

The Vampire Diaries’ smoldering stars, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev, broke up months ago, just like their characters on the long-running CW drama.

The two, who dated for several years, have slowly drifted apart, and sources say it’s no shock that their lives are mirrored in the supernatural drama this year.

  • Delena Sex GIF
  • Nikki Reed Picture

Allegedly, it was by Nina’s request that “Delena” (for Damon and Elena) was no longer the focal point of the series, and not just because she hates bad TV.

Dobrev reportedly hates that Nikki Reed is dating with and loving Ian Somerhalder and she can’t stand to even be near him, even when he’s playing Damon.

It’s easy to dismiss these reports as mere celebrity gossip fodder, but lest we forget, Ian and Nina met and fell in love while playing out the fictional romance.

Elena and Damon became fan favorites, and fans went gaga when the on-screen couple fell into an off-screen relationship. It was all too good to be true.

Things ended this year, with fans trashing Reed and Somerhalder defending his magical, beautiful girlfriend online in ways he never publicly spoke of Nina.

If Nina didn’t publicly lobby for Delena fall apart on the show – or at least take a back seat for awhile – it’s hard to imagine a world where she’s upset about it.

Some insiders say the two purposely try to avoid each other. Awkward.

When The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1 airs next month, we will pick up months after Damon “died” … no doubt to get him away from Elena.

Sure, it could (and likely is) a tired plot device designed to kill time before bringing Delena back together for the show’s endgame, but it works out now.

This way, they don’t have to force feelings that are no longer there.

And if this is the last season, as has been rumored for some time and probably should be the case given the total creative shutdown, well, they’ll survive.

That way, all parties can move on sooner rather than later.

Sons of Anarchy Premiere Shatters Series Ratings Record

Sons of Anarchy is off and running killing… and setting series ratings record.

According to an FX press release, the Sons of Anarchy Season 7 premiere drew 6.2 million total viewers, along with a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49, both high water marks for the Kurt Sutter-produced drama.

Jax on SOA

The extra long episode mostly centered on Jax’s thirst for vengeance, as he’s now out of prison and focused on taking down those responsible for his wife’s murder on the Season 6 finale.

He believes that to be the Chinese, but viewers all know better, of course. Gemma is to blame.

Elsewhere, Wendy is back in the picture; Unser could be in major trouble; and all members of SAMCRO say they are “all in” for whatever scheme Jax has in mind.

Did you catch the opener? If not, you can go watch Sons of Anarchy online right now!

Dancing with the Stars

Did you see the latest Tango? How about that Rumba?!? Even through 18 seasons, Dancing with the Stars remains a must-Tweet event.

ANNA KENDRICK Dishes To Glamour About Working & Tweeting

Anna Kendrick 1If you thought things were going to slow down for Anna Kendrick after ‘Twilight’ ended, think again! She’s had her busiest year yet with back-to-back projects. Anna dished to Glamour on her projects and even decoded some of her tweets. RELATED: Anna Kendrick reminds us why we love her on ELLE.

Anna’s making the most of her opportunities post-’Twilight,’ although she was doing well even while the franchise was ongoing. She was nominated for an Academy Award while the ‘Twilight’ movies were still coming out! Here are some excerpts from her Glamour interview.

Anna on managing back-to-back projects…
“It’s really fun. It’s like eating Cheerios every morning and then switching to Froot Loops. It’s exciting to eat Froot Loops!”

Anna on her “Dongs All Over the World” Saturday Night Live digital short…
“There was a moment when they worried it was too provocative. But even though it’s silly, there’s a pro-sex, feminist message in it somewhere. Like, if Justin Timberlake gets to say ‘Dick in a Box,’ then we get to say, ‘Dongs All Over the World.’”

Anna on her appearance…
“The thing is, my appearance – that’s never been my moneymaker. I’m fine being small. I’m fine being all the things I am. And I’m happy I’m not supposed to be on the 50 Most Beautiful list all the time, because that would be super f—king stressful.”

Anna on the complications of Hollywood life…
“Sometimes I just want to wear the same outfit for three days in a row. And I kind of can’t.”

Anna Kendrick (@AnnaKendrick47) decodes her tweets for Glamour:
The tweet: “Thought for the day: If I were going to take a naked picture of myself, I would…clean my room first.”
The backstory: “So I go on Reddit and invariably end up clicking on ‘GoneWild’ posts. It’s always girls taking naked pictures in the mirror, and their room behind them is a disaster. If I were a guy, I would not be turned on. I would be like, ‘Make your bed!’”

The tweet: “Someone just looked at my food selection and said, ‘Aw, good for you.’ If she goes missing, I’ve been at home all day.”
The backstory: “You know when you order pasta and somebody says, ‘Good for you’? It’s this passive-aggressive underhanded compliment. I should be secure enough not to let it bother me, but I was like, ‘What the f–k is that supposed to mean?’”

LOL! Anna got honest with Glamour, too, as you can see. You can read her entire interview, as well as see more of her cool photo shoot, in the August issue of Glamour. It hits newsstands TODAY (Katie Holmes is on the cover).

Saturday Night Live Presents Waking Up with Kimye… Wedding Edition!

The Kim Kardashian-Kanye West wedding WILL take place on May 24. Of that we are certain.

Will it take place in Paris? In Italy at Belvedere Fort? Will Jay Z serve as Kanye’s Best Man? Will the marriage last longer than 72 days?

Questions abound over the nuptials, but this much we know to be true:

Waking Up with Kimye is hilarious!

Saturday Night Live aired another edition of this skit last night, with host Andy Samberg guest-starring as the couple’s wedding planner. Watch the show lampoon the tandem below:

Miley Cyrus to Remain Hospitalized for Indeterminate Period of Time

Poor Miley Cyrus.

The singer won’t be Twerking with any giant stuffed animals any time soon.

Following an allergic reaction to antibiotics on Tuesday, Cyrus was hospitalized and forced to cancel a couple stops on her Bangerz tour.

Miley Cyrus in Nevada

Now, according to E! News, it sounds like she won’t be entertaining fans for quite a long while.

The artist’s rep says “Miley was suffering from a sinus infection during her tour in N.C. a week ago [and] was prescribed the antibiotic cephalexin” as a result.

The kind of allergic reaction she fell victim to this week often takes anywhere from 5 to 27 days to clear up.

“She will remain hospitalized and is under a doctor’s care until we see some improvement in her condition and is asking for your compassion and privacy at this time,” the rep added.

“Miley is devastated about missing shows and possibly disappointing her fans.”

Some of those fans, meanwhile, have actually accused Cyrus of faking her illness, an allegation that caused Miley to lash out via Twitter yesterday.

The singer has already postponed concert dates in Kansas City and St. Louis and it looks like she’ll be unable to perform for hometown fans tomorrow evening in Nashville.

An earlier report claimed Cyrus has been drinking, drugging and partying hard since the death of her dog and this lifestyle – not a sinus infection – was to blame for her illness, her medication and her subsequent reaction.

You may decide for yourself just what made Miley sick, but let’s all hope she’s up and shaking her butt again soon.

Is Gwyneth Paltrow ‘leaking rumors’ about Chris Martin’s alleged infidelities?

goop moses

In between paid/sponsored tweets for her new gig as a spokesperson for Restorsea, Gwyneth Paltrow tweeted this photo of Moses Bruce Paltrow Martin yesterday. Moses turned 8 years old yesterday, that’s why. It looks like he didn’t want to take the photo too, which is just funny. Perhaps he’s at the age where hugging his mom is a fate worse than death. I can hear the shriek of “Stop it, MAAAH-OM!!!” from here.

Anyway, it’s a good photo of Goop. And isn’t that the point? The Rebranding of Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth, the hands-on earth mother who feeds her blonde children all-organic food (prepared lovingly by her own hand) as Bad Father Chris Martin fools around with SNL staffers and British socialites whilst eating Big Macs. That’s the impression I’m getting – that’s the story we’re supposed to be writing about. And according to Radar, Chris is getting wise to Goop’s PR game:

It may have been a “conscious uncoupling,” but the split between Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin is getting sloppy! According to an insider, Martin, 37, fears his ex is spreading vicious cheating rumors about him to he will appear “less sympathetic” and Paltrow, 41, plans to take the Coldplay frontman to the cleaners when it comes to squeezing spousal support from him, is exclusively reporting.

“Chris now believes that Gwyneth is leaking rumors about his alleged trysts in an effort to sully his image and make him look less sympathetic,” the source told Radar. “Gwyn is so angry that she’s threatening to turn the divorce ugly, saying she’s going to squeeze spousal support out of Chris, despite her multi-million dollar fortune.”

Together, Paltrow and Martin are worth a mind-blowing $280 million — but the source says the GOOP founder could take Martin for an extra $25 million!

“Gwyneth believes she deserves a settlement of at least a lump sum of $25 million from Chris because he is the breadwinner and their kids will live with her most of the time,” the source said. “She believes Chris should ‘man up’ and do the chivalrous thing. Friends are bracing for an ugly divorce showdown.”

However, the insider claims Paltrow is furious over the recent report that Martin hooked up with a Saturday Night Live assistant — while he and Paltrow were still together.

“Friends of the of the couple point to a major double standard, with Gwyneth having pushed for open marriage so she could pursue other men, but demanding absolute fidelity from Chris,” the source told Radar. “Chris is telling friends that Gwyneth was so self-involved that she believed she was more evolved than Chris and that she could better emotionally handle juggling out of marriage relationships with other men.”

[From Radar]

You know what? Radar ran that off the rails. Even though I’m loathe to give Gwyneth credit for anything, I honestly don’t believe she would be so gauche as to use her powerful publicist to spread rumors about Chris… in order to get more money in a divorce settlement. Now, would she try to turn the PR against Chris to protect her brand and her wholesome lifestyle image? That’s the question. I also don’t think Gwyneth offered Chris an open marriage because she wanted to fool around – I think that was Gwyneth trying to save her marriage in the face of Chris’s (alleged) infidelities.
