Prince William’s press office is in shambles because he ‘does not take advice’

wenn21926394

Slowly but surely, “sources” have been leaking interesting details about the inner workings of Kensington Palace/Clarence House, meaning Duchess Kate and Prince William’s people and how those people interact with Prince Charles’ people, and how good all of these people really are at their jobs. My take has always been that Charles actually learned a lot about the press machine when he was with Diana – you could call it trial by fire, because anyone engaging in a press battle with Diana always lost, because she had an otherworldly gift for media management. But Charles took what he learned and he put it into somewhat good use, like getting the public used to Camilla and at this point, getting the public to gradually accept the idea of a Queen Camilla.

But what about William and Kate? The problem, I’ve always felt, is that William thinks he has his mother’s gift for PR and he just doesn’t. So much of what William and Kate try to do in the press is often blatant propaganda spin and/or lies. No nuance, no give and take, no sticking to an accessible press narrative. I think William is a temperamental man and he doesn’t understand why the press won’t just do as their told, and so he yells and throws tantrums about it. So, guess what? As it turns out, NO ONE wants to be in charge of Will and Kate’s press office.

Polishing the images of the popular Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry should be one of the plum jobs in PR. But I hear their appointment of a new communications secretary has proved such a fraught process that they have drafted in a highly paid firm of headhunters. Former BBC producer Ed Perkins quit Kensington Palace more than seven weeks ago, after only two years as their press secretary, and Prince William, Kate and Harry have still not found a suitable candidate to succeed him.

‘It’s a nightmare,’ claims a senior courtier. ‘Prince William does not take advice readily — let’s put it like that. Several well-qualified candidates have been ruled out.’

William has a reputation for being strong-willed, but a Kensington Palace spokesman denies suggestions that the Prince has made clear he does not want anyone who has worked at Buckingham Palace or Prince Charles’s office at Clarence House.

‘The recruitment process is ongoing,’ says the spokesman. ‘It has been straightforward and we are close to an appointment being made.’

Plans were announced in January for a unified media operation based at Buckingham Palace for all members of the Royal Family, but they have been shelved amid some tensions. Prince Charles’s staff have returned to Clarence House while William, Kate and Harry have their own office at Kensington Palace. The plans are said to have caused friction between Buckingham Palace press chief Sally Osman, and Kristina Kyriacou, Prince Charles’s outgoing communications secretary. Kyriacou, a straight-talking former PR for pop singers such as Take That star Gary Barlow and Bjork, favoured a more dynamic, modern approach to promoting the heir to the throne, but she is said to have come up against resistance from traditionalists.

Perkins, who has left to join the PR firm Portland, succeeded Miguel Head after he was promoted to the role of William, Kate and Harry’s private secretary. Head was at the hospital when Kate gave birth to Prince George and is said to act more like a friend of William than an employee.

[From The Daily Mail]

So, everything is in shambles, it sounds like. The Queen tried to ease Charles into some kind of power position and it sounds like her staffers at BP were in open revolt. It also sounds like Charles’ people weren’t up for the more difficult task of actually firing some of the “old guard” men in grey who have been there much too long. As for William and Kate’s press office… “Prince William does not take advice readily — let’s put it like that.” WOW. Let’s put it like this: William thinks he’s a genius and everyone should just do what he says and then when it all blows up in his face, he yells and blames everyone for doing what he said.

Oh, and as for William and Kate’s NYC trip December 7-9… they will attend their first basketball game! They will watch a game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Brooklyn Nets. The game is in Brooklyn, and Page Six says it will be the second time ever that a member of the royal family has visited Brooklyn. Princess Diana was the first to go to Brooklyn (before it was COOL TO GO BROOKLYN), back in 1989. I want to see Will and Kate rock some hipster style for their jaunt to Brooklyn. Kate can break out her skinny jeans, maybe an “ironic” flannel and trucker’s hat and some horn-rimmed glasses. William should grow some ironic facial hair. Maybe a soul patch. Last thing: Prince George will not be coming on this trip. Probably because he would have punched Mayor de Blasio in the face.

James Middleton Wants to Be the "Cool Uncle" to Prince George, Sibling

Kate Middleton’s younger brother James Middleton gave a rare interview to ABC News in which he discussed being the cool uncle to Prince George.

“I still see Prince George as my nephew,” the 27-year-old royal in-law said about the adorable little boy who just happens to be the future King of England.

“I just want to be the best uncle possible. Like any uncle wants to be, I want to be the cool uncle. The fun uncle. That’s what sort of I’ll always try and be.”

While George’s other uncle, Prince Harry, is a royal himself and a military man who has piloted Apache helicopters, James prefers the sweeter things in life.

Like his Boomf marshmallow business! Seriously. The company’s founder even created a fun official title for himself, labeling himself “Wonka-in-chief.”

“We thought we’d just add the fun throughout the company so the staff in production are ‘Boomfaloopas.’ We obviously take a lot of sort of magic from Willy Wonka.”

Still, James, also the younger brother of Pippa Middleton, said he has yet to find a Christmas gift for little George, saying he hasn’t “even gotten that far yet.”

During the interview, James Middleton had only good things to say about the media attention his family received after Prince George’s birth in July 2013.

“I think what was the most wonderful thing,” he says. “Everybody was celebrating with us, for me becoming an uncle and for my parents becoming grandparents.”

“They were all so excited,” he reflects.

Prince George and Parents

Prince George, now one year old, is fascinated by butterflies in this adorable new photo released by the royal family. Parents Kate and William look on proudly.

The youngest of three siblings added that the Middleton family is constantly in communication and that he gets together “all the time” with his sisters.

While the world gears up for a second royal baby, James provided updates on the often-ill pregnant-again Kate Middleton‘s current health condition.

“She’s better,” James told ABC of Kate. “I mean, it’s not unknown that she suffered from this acute morning sickness. Fortunately she is, I think, on the mend.”

He also remained tight-lipped about whether the couple’s second child will be a girl or boy. “It’s wonderful to have another niece or nephew on the way,” he said.

Congrats to James and his whole family!

Prince Harry wants to find a wife… so he can further his military career?

wenn21898760

As we heard last week, it sounds like Prince Harry is a single man once again after his thing with Cressida Bonas likely fizzled out for a second time. So, Harry is the most eligible bachelor in England, sort of. What’s interesting is that it feels like Harry has been getting his act together a lot in the past few years. He’s working hard, he’s organizing huge events (the Invictus Games), he’s growing in his royal role all while maintaining a desk job military position. I had assumed that Harry would probably never serve overseas in any kind of combat position again after serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan, but People Mag says that he wants to fly again:

Prince Harry has been talking longingly about how he misses flying. The helicopter pilot has been doing a desk job in London this year, focused mainly on bringing his Invictus Games for injured servicemen and women to fruition. But at a party on Friday marking the contribution of those who help to rehabilitate wounded warriors, he told guests he would like to return to flying one day.

Speaking of Harry’s reminiscences, Flt. Sgt. Lee Renard, a veteran of tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2006 and 2014, told reporters, “He said he enjoyed the flying and he missed it.” Indeed, another veteran, Flt. Lt. Lance Levin, a Chinook helicopter pilot from 27 Squadron, RAF Odiham, said Harry mentioned he “would like to return at some point.”

Captain Harry Wales, as he is known in the army, was honored for being the best co-pilot gunner during training in 2012 and then flew Apache attack helicopters on a tour that ended after five months in January 2013. He also took part in a 10-week tour while serving as a second lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry in 2008.

Harry took his current desk job organizing special ceremonial events about a year ago in the run-up to the hugely successful Invictus Games. He is still focused on that, aides have said. A decision will be made about his future toward the end of his posting, which lasts another year or so.

[From People]

It’s interesting, but it’s far from the squirrelly moves that William made over the past year to ensure that he could return to flying, even if it was as a (somewhat) commercial pilot. People Mag makes it sound like Harry was just reminiscing, thinking aloud about how much he would love to do another tour. But The Daily Mail’s sources say that this whole thing has been on Harry’s mind for a while, and he’s figured out a solution to all of his problems: he needs to get married… to further his military career.

Prince Harry has told friends he wants to find an ‘army wife’ after voicing fears that his bachelor status may be holding back his military career. He has been a captain with the Blues and Royals since 2011 but is hoping for a promotion to Major – a senior role mostly held by married family men. The 30-year-old had on-off relationships with Chelsy Davy, 29, and Cressida Bonas, 25, and knows finding a girl willing to put up with royal and military commitments will be hard.

‘I’ll have to marry if I’m to stay in the Army. I don’t think I can climb the ranks as a bachelor,’ he told friends, according to the Sunday People. ‘Being a soldier’s wife can be dull, especially if troops are away on ops like I am. It’s a lot of hassle,’ he admitted to friends.

A colleague said: ‘A lot of the people Harry joined up with are now wed. He’s one of a small number of bachelors still clinging on to that single status. Harry says he wants to marry but he knows he has to find someone he loves who will put up with the pressure of being wed to a famous man as well as being an Army wife. That’s quite a combination.’

The role of officer’s wife is critical to regimental life, especially when forces are on operations abroad.

[From The Daily Mail]

I’d never really thought about it, but I guess this might be true. It’s very true in the corporate world – married (heterosexual) men get ahead. Married men rise up the ranks faster than single men. Married life gives the aura of professional stability to men. But I wouldn’t think that it would be ingrained in Britain’s military ranks, where a PRINCE who had served two tours of duty and trained on Apaches would not be able to rise through the ranks because of his single status. And seriously, NO aristocratic or old-moneyed girl is going to want to sign up for this, even if he is a cute ginger princeling. The aristocratic girls have no interest in being an Army Wife or marrying Harry just to further his career. He needs someone more middle class, perhaps a girl from a military family.

Cressida Bonas Dumps Prince Harry After She Catches Him Cheating?!

Well, it looks like it’s over (again) for that other royal couple.

Sources say that in the weeks after Cressida Bonas and Prince Harry got back together in September, their relationship was stronger than ever.

  • Harry, Prince of Wales
  • Cressida Bonas Photograph

Now, however, they’re reportedly done for good, as Harry just couldn’t keep his scepter in pants palace.

“Harry still acts like a teenager,” a source tells Star magazine. “When he’s drinking, he’ll stick his tongue down the throat of any girl who strikes his fancy.”

Cressida dumped Harry back in April, supposedly as a result of his hard-partying ways.

Insiders say Kate Middleton urged Cressida to take Harry back. She did so, and lived to regret the decision:

“[Cressida] was angry with herself for trusting Harry again,” says the source. “He said he was sorry and that it would never happen again, but the damage was done. She thinks he’ll never change.”

There was talk in the British tabloids that now that Harry is 30, he would be anxious to settle down and would likely propose to Cressida.

But no, he’s back on the market once more, like a wild ginger stallion that can’t be tamed.

Hey, he may never get the throne, but there are some perks to being the younger royal. Namely, when the press reports on your misbehavior, it’s treated as a curiosity rather than a travesty.

Prince William Coming To NYC With Kate Middleton?

Royal Send-Off Of The Tour de FranceNew York City might have some royal visitors soon! Prince William might be planning a trip to NYC soon. He might even bring Kate Middleton, formally known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, with him. Cue squeeing RELATED: Kate Middleton is forced to cancel her first public appearance since her second pregnancy was announced.

People reports that the trip is set for later this fall, so we’re talking within the next couple of months, given that it’s October. Kate accompanying him wasn’t in the initial plans, but a source says palace officials are keeping an “open mind” about the possibility of her coming with him.

Kate’s health is a major factor. Her handlers say her schedule is being taken “day by day,” but she’s already had to cancel her first solo overseas trip to Malta and an official engagement in the UK due to her morning sickness.

At this point, the palace refuses to even confirm if William is making a trip to the States. They said an announcement “will be made in due course.” They wouldn’t dangle the possibility of a trip if it weren’t going to happen, would it? Perhaps it depends on how the prince is doing with his exams to become an ambulance helicopter pilot. Hopefully they’re going well!

Kate Middleton Forced To Cancel Her First Public Appearance Since Baby Announcement

William, Kate & Prince Harry Visit Tower Of London's Ceramic Poppy FieldIt sounds like Kate Middleton is still suffering from severe morning sickness. Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge was supposed to attend the opening of the Clore Art Room at London’s Barlby Primary School as part of the Clore Duffield Foundation’s 50th anniversary year. However, she was forced to cancel the appearance. RELATED: Kate Middleton was forced to cancel her first solo overseas tour.

The Duchess said in a statement:

I am truly sorry that I cannot be with you all today as you celebrate this milestone. My sincere apologies for not being able to join you, but I hope that I will have an opportunity to visit Barlby and see the Clore Art Room soon.”

A palace spokeswoman wouldn’t say if further scheduled appearances will be canceled.

As with all her engagements, we are taking decisions closer to the time of them occurring, and we are keeping them under review.”

I can understand that. How do people expect her to KNOW if she’s going to feel ill or not? These things don’t have a clear-cut timetable! Hopefully Kate is taking care of herself, first and foremost. I’m sure she’ll resume her public engagements as soon as she’s able.

Duchess Kate is feeling better, plans to do events in October & November

FFN_Middleton_Kate_FFUK_070114_51466608

At the end of the day, Duchess Kate really didn’t have to cancel too many activities, events and appearances because of her second round of hyperemesis gravidarum. She canceled her half of the joint appearance she was supposed to do with William at Oxford, and she canceled her Malta trip (William went in her place). Is that it? Oh, she was supposed to attend the opening of the Invictus Games, but everyone else came out and no one made a big deal about it. All this means that Kate’s public schedule – three and a half years after becoming a royal – is still very, very light. But now Kate’s staff is trying to convince us that she’s already on the mend and she’ll totally make some appearances in the next few months:

The Duchess of Cambridge is preparing to return to work after recovering from three weeks of acute morning sickness. According to Royal aides, the Duchess is planning to resume official engagements next month, with a spokesman telling The Mail on Sunday: ‘There will be engagements in October and November. We just haven’t announced them yet.’

The Duchess has been suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum – the condition she suffered during her pregnancy with Prince George. Although she has not been admitted to hospital this time, she has received medical assistance at Kensington Palace. The Duchess’s last official engagement was on August 5 when she opened a poppy installation at the Tower of London with her husband William and Prince Harry. But she has not carried out a charitable engagement since July, when went to a North London school to see one of her M-Pact projects, and has told aides she is keen to revisit some of her charities.

Now that she is feeling better, the couple are expected to move into their new ten-bedroom Georgian pile, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk.

‘While they will be predominantly living in Norfolk, the intention is for Kate to hop between London and Norfolk while looking after Prince George,’ said a source.

[From The Daily Mail]

People’s royal aide/sources said the same thing: “There are engagements she would like to do over the coming months, but they are being reviewed daily.” Kate is also “up and about” and feeling better day by day, according to those aides. If she’s feeling better, I’m glad. I want her to be well. But I’m also not going to hold my breath for Kate to make any public appearances anytime soon. But I’m sure we’ll find out about her “secret visits” to her charities… just as soon as someone gets a photo of her shopping. In fact, as soon as she’s seen at the shops, that’s when we’ll know she’s feeling better.

Meanwhile, Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton has said that if this baby is a girl, William and Kate will totally name the girl Diana. Or use Diana as a middle name. Morton said: “Close friends to William and Kate have told me that if it is a girl they want to name the baby after Diana. They discussed girls’ names before George was born and now they’re hoping the next one is a girl so they can carry out their wish to honour William’s mother. They’re not too thrilled at the thought it will be shortened to Princess Di. But it won’t change their minds.” I really hope they don’t name a baby Diana for the first name. It just feels… I don’t know, it makes me uncomfortable. As a middle name, sure. Go ahead. Like, Elizabeth Diana or Victoria Diana, something like that.

Duchess Kate ‘has been put in charge of Prince William,’ claims Germaine Greer

wenn21597357

Newsweek conducted an interesting poll about what the average British citizen really thinks about the royal family – you can see the breakdown of the results here. The highlights: Prince Harry is by far the most popular figure in the royal family, even beating out the Queen. Prince Harry is the most popular, followed by the Queen, Prince William and then Kate in fourth place. The breakdown of the numbers in other areas is interesting too – 66% of men said “they would not want to be Kate’s friend, husband or boyfriend” and 15% of all respondents said they would never want to be or know Kate. Three percent think Kate is “lazy” and 22% think Kate’s body has become “public property.” Speaking of… popular Aussie feminist writer/thinker Germaine Greer has some thoughts about Kate and the royal family:

Feminist thinker Germaine Greer has said that the Duchess of Cambridge has a “bastard of a job” and dismissed the the royal family a “mad anachronism” in a strongly-worded interview with Newsweek Europe.

“Kate is a great deal more intelligent than the rest of the royals,” said Greer, the author of the 1968 book The Female Eunuch, a canonical work of 20th-century feminism. “She has been put in charge of William.”

Referring to Kate’s chronic morning sickness, hyperemesis gravidarum, which she has struggled with both in her previous and current pregnancies, Greer said that the Duchess is under too much pressure to reproduce in her role as royal consort.

“[Kate] is vomiting her guts up and shouldn’t have been made to go through all this again so soon,” she said. “It’s not so much that she has to be a womb, but she has to be a mother. I would hope after this one she says, ‘That’s it. No more’.” Greer also suggested that Kate’s high-profile role in public life might have triggered unhealthy eating habits. “The girl is too thin,” she said.

Deploring a perceived lack of agency, Greer claimed that Kate’s personal freedoms have been largely curtailed by her position in the royal family. “Kate is not even allowed to decorate her own houses. Even the wives of the American presidents get to do that. The whole thing is a mad anachronism. The ‘firm’ tell us that the first born will now become the monarch regardless of sex. Well, big f–king deal! She cannot do or say anything spontaneous. She has learned what she has to do and say and how to do and say it in the approved way. Spontaneity will get her in trouble,” Greer added.

Greer observed that Kate, who achieved two As and a B at A-level and an upper-second class degree in history of art from St Andrews, one of Britain’s top universities, “is not allowed to have an interest in modern culture, even in art – to collect, to attend openings.”

[From Newsweek]

We debate this a lot, “What Kate Is Allowed To Do” versus “What Kate Is Unwilling To Do.” I personally think Kate is “unwilling” to do more, but many think that the powers that be (William, Charles, the Queen, the Men In Grey) are imposing rules on Kate’s behavior, clothing and work schedule. I will say this – I think Kate got pregnant again because she wanted to. I think she genuinely wanted another baby. And she wanted a post hoc excuse for why she and William were moving to the country. While I’ll definitely admit there are feminist issues with Kate’s agency over her body, her image and her time, I’ll also say… this is what she signed up for. This is why she was a Waity for nine years. She knew the deal.
