Zoe Saldana: ‘We’re all ethnic in America. None of us are aboriginal people’

Zoe Saldana

Here are some photos of Zoe Saldana with Marco Perego (and his interesting ‘stache) out for lunch on Sunday. Zoe hasn’t stopped for even a moment during her pregnancy. She’s not filming, but she’s been promoting her work like crazy. Soon after she gives birth, all of her franchises — Avatar, Star Trek & Guardians — will come calling for sequels. The workload sounds rough with twins on the way, but Marco will probably be a hands-on dad. He seems like he would be, right?

Zoe appears in an episode of AOL’s brand new web series, My Hero, and she did an interview with Popwatch to promote the appearance. Zoe said that her hero is her mother, who taught her daughters how to be tough. Her mom sounds pretty rad, and I love what Zoe has to say about the film roles she chooses to pursue. I really like that part of the discussion because she expresses herself so clearly. Zoe drops some f-bombs when the subject changes to her distaste for the word “ethnic.” Let’s do this:

Zoe’s hero is her mom: “As a parent, she put us first–and we lost a parent, so she had to become those two anchors in our lives. She’s not perfect, but she always did her best and that’s something that’s worth recognizing. And [she] really let us find our own voice. My mom never manipulated us to become something that she wanted us to become because it was better for her. She always just told us the best advice–’I just want you happy.’ That’s also very hard to find.”

On playing badass women: “I don’t choose strong over–I choose real women. I feel like that’s different way of looking at it. In order for me to choose strong roles for women, that means that I’m noticing weakness–and it’s not the weakness that I’m noticing. It’s an inaccurate interpretation, [a] portrayal of female characters in stories that I’m naturally against. I have, like, an allergic reaction to it. The moment I read a story and I go, ‘Oh okay, well, she’s serviceable. There’s nothing special that she’s contributing to the story besides just being there to make the man comfortable, soothe him, fight for him, die for him–and he clearly doesn’t give a f— about her, because he’s trying to find his own self.’ You kind of go, ‘Eh, no I don’t want to promote that anymore.’ I want to be a part of stories where women are important. It doesn’t have to be bigger roles; it doesn’t have to be action-driven. That is a desire of mine, because I’m a very active, athletic person, and that is something I purposely go after because I enjoy it. I also know that there’s a strong message for young females… Don’t just think of yourself as a delicate petal. You can jump, you can climb, you can punch, you can throw balls. Just think of yourself as all these other things as well.”

Balancing baby with her sequels: “I know that we will work everything out. I have to say, I’m very lucky. They’ve been very understanding, especially with what’s happening in my personal life. I’ve gotten nothing but support. To know that we are getting to that place where women can have that support from male driven workforces is–I have to say, it’s very inspiring. And also, they don’t have a choice! I’m not going to rip my child off my tit to go work. Like, you just cannot do it. What kind of mother would I be? There’s no choice. It’s like, ‘What, you want me to leave my newborn so that I can work 16 hours on your set? He’s only a month old, are you out of your mind?’ And the good thing is that half of the people you work with are all parents, and they get it.”

Zoe’s tired of the word “ethnic”: “I don’t know what it would be like to grow up in a house where you heard words like ‘black,’ ‘white,’ ‘ethnic.’ You know what I’m saying? Where everything is just a ‘cultural this’ and a ‘cultural that.’ My mother knew people by name, and that was it. It always freaks me out when I see people that don’t consider themselves ethnic just use the word ‘ethnic.’ It’s going ‘oh, because ethnic people…’ What are you trying to say? You mean people not like you? What are you, then? It just doesn’t, I don’t… f— off. f— you. Like, it’s 2014, America. We’re all ethnic here in America; let’s be f—ing real. None of us are aboriginal people, okay? Did you attend your history classes in third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, you bigot? There’s a big elephant in the room, and it’s crowding my space now. And I’m done with it.”

[From Popwatch]

I need to take a nap after the last paragraph. Zoe broke me. She’s going to town on a subject she feels passionate about. I could certainly take her more seriously without all of the profanity. I curse all the time, but there’s a time and place for it. When Zoe’s trying to make a point (and she does have one) and wants to be taken seriously … yeah, it would help if she didn’t pepper her points with f-bombs. But I’m tired of arguing. Zoe tires me out.

Lena Dunham On Losing Her Virginity And Not Getting Her 90210 Moment

lenadunham3

Lena Dunham stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres Show today to promote her new biography “Not That Kind of Girl.”  The actress and author shared a few snippets from her book, including bits about celibacy and losing her viriginity in college being a little bit of a let down!

The “Girls” star decided at age 9 that she wanted to be celibate until after high school.  She wrote her promise to herself on a piece of paper and ate it.  “Because that’s how I thought you officially sealed contracts.  I thought that’s basically what adults did if they were buying real estate, getting a divorce, you eat the paper.”
Lena then thought her will power wouldn’t be that strong and wrote up a contract and asked her mom to sign it.  Her mom refused, saying that Lena might not be able to stick to that kind of a promise and didn’t want her to be disappointed in herself.  “My mom was like ‘you just never know what’s gonna happen. I don’t want you to sign a contract you can’t keep.   So, I’m not gonna sign the contract.’ I think it was very enlightened of her.  And it turns out I didn’t need a contract.”

Lena kept her virginity until college and shared that she had a HARD TIME finding someone to help her lose it when she finally decided she was ready.  “I think I thought that it was gonna be pretty easy to find a guy who was interested in divesting me of this. It turned out to be a real wild goose chase.”   She shares the story of her attempts to lose it in her book.

Lena confesses that she had high hopes for the big event, but it was NOTHING like she saw on TV.  “And when it finally happened, I was comparing it to 90210 David and Donna.  Flower petals, candles.  I did not have my Donna and David moment.”  She laughed, “I remember thinking I’d wake up and look in the mirror and have these puffy lips and this really long hair.  I thought there was going to be some magical transformation.”

Have you picked up a copy of Lena’s new book yet?  Are you planning to check it out?

Brangelina Wedding Coverage, Day 7. I’m not sure how I feel about all of the wedding info coming out in drips and drabs, but we finally got our hands on the print edition of People Magazine, so FINALLY I’m able to pass on all of the details about what really matters: the wedding food. YES. Here are my random thoughts as I’m going through People’s cover story:

*Shiloh wore a top hat, obviously. But did you know that Knox also wore a special hat? It looks like an old-school admiral’s hat. Like, Knox is working his very own nautical theme.

*Brad honestly didn’t see Angelina’s dress until she walked down the aisle.

*The kids wrote the vows that Brad and Angelina spoke to each other. “They asked us to make promises to each other,” Angelina says.

*The cake that Pax made was “adorably askew” and “generously frosted.” There is a photo of the cake which looks like it’s about six cakes all stacked on top of each other. Pax looked very proud of it but I swear that Maddox is giving it the side-eye.

*Vivienne and Zahara tossed the rose petals but Z was in charge of holding the petal basket, only I swear that the “basket” is just a ceramic soufflé dish. The petals were hot pink.

*Not only did Brad have a stone engraved in the chapel in honor of Marcheline Bertrand, but both Angelina and James Haven wore special pieces of jewelry that once belonged to Marcheline. Angelina wore “a little flower ring” on her index finger and James Haven wore an angel pin that he found in Marcheline’s jewelry box.

*Angelina designed Brad’s wedding band and he designed hers, all in association with Robert Procop. For the wedding, Angelina wore a pair of earrings that she already owned (I’m looking closely… they just look like simple pearls?).

*The wedding gown inspiration? Princess Fiona from Shrek. Hand to God!

*Versace tailor Luigi Massi has known Angelina for years and years and he “knows and cares for the children,” as Angelina says. He was apparently fine with adding all of the kids’ drawings on the gown and veil.

*WEDDING FOOD: “kid friendly, BBQ-style fare, washed down with award-winning Miraval rose from the couple’s vineyards and Jolie’s beverage of choice, Bosnian rose petal juice – a sweet drink made from brewed rose petals, strained and blended with simple syrup. Dessert included Pax’s cake along with several flavors of sorbet and chocolate and vanilla ice cream.”

*Brad’s parents posed for a really cute photo with Viv, Shiloh, Knox and Zahara. Both Jane and Bill wore all-black (I suppose in honor of Angelina!!).

[From People Magazine (premium)]

My new favorite detail is about the Bosnian rose petal juice. How fancy!

Last thing – Us Weekly’s sources claim that months ago, Angelina was seen “stocking up” on bridal magazines in Hollywood. Back in May, she stopped by the Daily Planet and bought up copies of Martha Stewart Weddings and other wedding/bridal mags. My theory: she just bought the magazines for Zahara and Z was the one who acted as wedding coordinator for the Jolie-Pitt children. I can picture Z with a highlighter and post-its to mark the magazine pages. Can’t you?

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt’s wedding photos cover People, Hello magazines

jolie people

Well, well. I wondered last week if Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were going to sell/give away their wedding photos to People Magazine and Hello, and wouldn’t you know? It happened. I don’t know if People/Hello paid for this exclusive, but I suspect they did. Or at the very least, the magazines made a substantial contribution to one of the Jolie-Pitt foundations or charities. You can read Hello’s exclusive here, and here’s People’s article:

When Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie went about planning their big day, they didn’t have to look far to find the perfect wedding planners: their six children.

The intimate Aug. 23 ceremony – attended by just 20 friends and family members – was held in the chapel of Château Miraval, the family’s estate in the French village of Correns. The wedding – including exclusive photos of the ceremony, Jolie’s unique dress (decorated with her children’s artwork!) and the entire family’s celebration – is featured in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, in conjunction with Hello! magazine internationally.

Each child had a key role to play: Eldest sons Maddox, 13, and Pax, 10, walked their mom down the aisle; flower girls Zahara, 9, and Vivienne, 6, tossed petals gathered from the garden; and Shiloh, 8, and Knox, 6, served as ring bearers. The kids also helped write their parents’ vows. And Pax baked the cake!

“It was important to us that the day was relaxed and full of laughter,” Pitt, 50, and Jolie, 39, tell PEOPLE. “It was such a special day to share with our children and a very happy time for our family.”

Even Jolie’s dress was an expression of her kids’ creativity: Luigi Massi, the master tailor at Atelier Versace, sewed dozens of designs from her children’s drawings into the dress and veil.

“Luigi is like family to me and I couldn’t imagine anyone else making this dress,” says Jolie. “He knows and cares for the children and it was great fun putting it together.”

Pitt wore a suit from his closet – with a tie borrowed from one of his sons because Pitt forgot to pack his. Zahara’s dress was designed by family friend Adama Kebe. Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, and Knox wore black suits (Shiloh’s included shorts and a top hat), and Vivienne wore a white dress from her closet. Jeweler Robert Procop, who designed Jolie’s engagement ring, created the couple’s wedding bands.

[From People]

I’m not disappointed with the kids at all, but THIS DRESS is a nightmare. I’m not even talking about the kids’ drawings on the back, although the execution of that is… not very good. But the silhouette, the design, the style of the dress just doesn’t suit her. Angelina is good in streamlined clothes and I really don’t get the bust of this dress at all. Ugh! Oh well. It wasn’t my wedding. Everything else is fine, I guess. I’m just grumbling about the dress. (And Shiloh wore WEDDING SHORTS! Montenegro Style!)

Malin Ackerman got a super short Miley Charlize Halle cut: cute or fug?

This is Malin Ackerman, 36. Before you go “who?” she is a TV actress and most recently starred on Trophy Wife, which was canceled by ABC earlier this year after one season. (I watched the pilot and it was pretty goofy. It also featured Marcia Gay Harden and Bradley Whitford.) I know her because she gets papped occasionally and keeps her name in the press, most notably when she broke up with her husband, musician Roberto Zincone, last year. She has one child with Zincone, son Sebastian, 16 months.

Anyway as you noticed from the title and photo above, Malin has chopped her formerly shoulder length hair into a very short piecey bob with shaved sides, similar to the looks sported by Miley Cyrus, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, and Robin Wright et. al. In these photos, taken at an HBO post-Oscars party, she looks pretty happy and excited to show it off, but she usually looks like that. She seems to have a happy, bubbly personality.

She looks at lot like Charlize in that photo above, doesn’t she? I think she looks pretty good, she’s gorgeous and can pull this off, but it’s a much different look than we’re used to seeing from her. Here’s what she looked like before:

Peoples Choice Awards arrivals

See, she looks totally different. Malin’s Wiki lets us know that she used to sing for an alternative band called The Petalstones, which her ex husband played drums for. So she may be more adventurous that we might assume.

US Magazine reports that Malin was flirting with Liev Schreiber’s brother at that HBO party where she debuted her haircut, to which I would say “yum” since I think Liev is The Sex. (I love Ray Donovan! It’s on Showtime though not HBO, why is his brother disrespecting him by partying with a rival cable network?!) I write that I would say yum, but then I read that Liev’s brother is Pornstache! Really! I forgot all about that. Pablo Schreiber is Liev’s half brother and he plays the sadistic bastard on Orange is The New Black. How can she get with that?!

Here’s what Pornstache looks like without a stache.

Women in Film & Television Pre-Emmy Party
Not my type at all, and hard for me to not associate with his character on OITNB. I guess he’s just a great actor like his hotter brother.

So Malin without hair is getting with Pornstache without a stache. Or at least she flirted with him once. It seems fitting somehow.

Slow Motion Puppy Kissing Booth: The Cutest Thing in the History of the World?

Remember the First Kiss video that featured strangers smooching and went viral and was all kinds of weird and creepy?

This is the exact opposite of that.

In Indiana earlier this month, Helping Paws and Ball State University teamed up at the State Fair to bring attendees a puppy kissing booth.

This is exactly what it sounds like: residents stopping by and having their faces licked by a young dog. But it’s even better on video… because every single kiss below is set in slow motion!

Seriously, it may not get cuter than watching excited kids having their mugs kissed by adorable puppies. In slow motion. See what we mean here:

In the mood for more examples of kids and canines? We thought you might be…

Shelter Dogs Undergo Amazing Transformations: See the Pics!

Remember this video of an abandoned dog undergoing an incredible makeover?

Well… we hope you’re in the mood to see many abandoned dogs that have undergone amazing makeovers.

The “Top Shelter Dog in America” contest recently concluded, as organizations The Wahl Foundation and GreaterGood.org teamed up to encourage shelters around the country to transform their residents.

These facilities were given supplies and asked to submit before-and-after photos, with $5,000 going to the shelter who did the best job making over one of its canines.

The goal, according to a manager at Wahl, was to promote adoption of these animals and “change public perceptions about dogs that might just need a little extra grooming and TLC.”

And the results, as you can see here, were astounding:

What a Transformation!

Hard to believe this is the same dog, isn’t it?

The Queen was not impressed with Duchess Kate’s hemlines, hair & wedges

kate1

Katie Nicholl has written a fascinating summary for the Mail on Sunday of Prince William and Duchess Kate’s royal tour. As you may remember, Katie Nicholl is something like Duchess Kate’s unofficial biographer –I’ve long suspected that Nicholl has some serious sources in the Middleton camp, perhaps even Duchess Kate and/or Carole Middleton. Nicholl has gotten tips for years about Kate and even William, and the price for Nicholl’s access to the Middleton world is that for the most part, Nicholl is overwhelmingly flattering and she presses this “modern fairy tale” image. You can read Nicholl’s piece here, and here are some highlights:

*The watch Kate wore throughout the tour (even to evening events where it looked out of place) was a “£3,600 love token” from William. Will gave Kate the watch a few weeks before the tour. It’s a “stainless steel £3,600 Ballon Bleu de Cartier watch, which is embedded with a sapphire stone to match her Princess Diana engagement ring.”

*William also gave Kate a diamond eternity band as a “push present” after George was born. We’ve heard that before, and Kate wore the eternity band with her sapphire ring throughout the tour as well.

*George consumes everything and anything. He likes to chew on whatever he gets his hands on, from his mom’s hair to stuffed wombats. George is on a special diet though: “High-end organic fresh fruit and vegetables were delivered to the couple every morning and George’s Spanish nanny, Maria Borrallo, made fresh purees each day…He also eats the exclusive Plum Organics dairy and additive-free baby food – options include a Greek-style yogurt with kale, strawberry and amaranth. George’s favourites are spinach, sweet potato and apple puree, and broccoli with pear and raspberry.”

*Kate still gets up early every day to do yoga and Will and Kate “squeezed in a daily dip in a pool whenever they could. Kate tries to swim 70 lengths a session.”

*Will and Kate both eat a lot of organic fruit and granola, then salads for lunch. They both eschewed carb-heavy meals and they requested no cakes to be laid out.

*Kate’s “Dream Team” included: “Kate’s trusted private secretary – and near lookalike – Rebecca Deacon, 30, who is dating William’s press secretary Nick Loughran, the group also includes personal assistant Natasha Archer, 27, who helps with Kate’s wardrobe; fellow St Andrews history of art graduate Sophie Agnew, 27, who helps her keep on top of personal admin; and trusted society hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker, 51.” Kate “insists” that they all call her by her first name.

*The “Marilyn Moments” need to stop, apparently. “Plans are afoot” from on high at Buckingham Palace to ensure that Kate stops flashing her beav everywhere. Nicholl says it was Kate’s decision to NOT add weights to her skirts.

*The length of the skirts was apparently a discussion topic between the Queen and Kate (and I would imagine a dozen courtiers). The Queen apparently ordered Kate to stop with the miniskirts and go for more refined, longer pencil skirts and such. Also: the word is that Buckingham Palace doesn’t care for the wedges. Ha!

*George’s tour wardrobe cost £700. Nicholl says Kate’s wardrobe cost £62,000.

*Kate’s hairdresser – who was on hand the whole time – charged Kate £6,000 (not including travel). Kate’s hair kept getting shorter too, because all in all, four inches were cut from Kate’s long locks. This too was ordered by the Queen, who thought Kate’s sausage curls were “drowning her.” Too true, your majesty.

*Kate didn’t wear sunscreen at all, so she got a tan and people were freaked out apparently. And Kate still does her own makeup, and Nicholl says Kate “applied it more heavily than usual.” I’ll say. Kate apparently uses liquid eyeliner from Lancome and her favorite perfume (these days) is White Gardenia Petals by Illuminum.

*The Middleton family has prepared a big welcome-home party for Will and Kate. James Middleton has been looking after Lupo this whole time.

*What’s next? Nicholl says that “after a fortnight of rest, William and Kate will be back on duty next month with official engagements.” They plan to move into Anmer Hall within the next month and “they plan to spend the summer ‘chillaxing’ there while George learns to walk.”

[From The Daily Mail]

I guess this is for everyone who claims that the Queen would never, ever tell Kate what to do. The unofficial Middleton biographer basically says that the Queen was exhausted by Kate’s miniskirts, Marilyn Moments and sausage curls and the Queen ordered her to make some changes. I wonder what the reaction was at BP when just a second after stepping off the plane in New Zealand, Kate’s skirt blew up and yet another commonwealth nation got to see Kate’s knickers. Well, at least the Queen is aware of the problem and she’s trying to do something about it. As for the “fortnight of rest” then a summer off? Sounds about right.
