Bill Simmons: Suspended by ESPN for Slamming Roger Goodell as a "Liar"

ESPN has suspended Bill Simmons for three weeks.

The company took this action against Simmons (who runs the website Grantland) after he went off on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell during a recent podcast, labeling Goodell a “liar” following the executive’s press conference on Monday.

Referring to the Ray Rice video – which features the former running back knocking out his then-fiancee inside an elevator – Simmons said of Goodell:

“If he didn’t know what was on that tape, he’s a liar… If you put him up on a lie-detector test, that guy would fail. And for all these people to pretend they didn’t know is such fuc-ing bullsh-t. It really is… And for him to go in that press conference and pretend otherwise, I was so insulted.”

Controversy continues to swell around Goodell and the league for how it handled Rice.

It took months for the NFL to suspend the star after footage surfaced of him dragging his unconscious fiancee out of an elevator in Atlantic City. And then it merely slapped Rice with a two-game ban.

After video from inside the elevator surfaced, and it depicted Rice clearly punching Janay Rice (his now-wife) in the face, the Ravens cut him and the NFL suspended him indefinitely.

But many don’t understand how TMZ obtained the second video and the NFL did not. At least one prominent source says the second tape was sent to the NFL offices many months ago, prompting Simmons’ outrage.

“Every employee must be accountable to ESPN and those engaged in our editorial operations must also operate within ESPN’s journalistic standards,” ESPN said in a statement.

“We have worked hard to ensure that our recent NFL coverage has met that criteria. Bill Simmons did not meet those obligations in a recent podcast, and as a result we have suspended him for three weeks.”

Of course, many people are now aghast of this punishment for two reasons:

  1. It makes it appear as if ESPN is deeply in bed with the NFL.
  2. The network only suspended Stephen A. Smith for one week after he pretty much said Janay Rice was partly to blame for the attack, saying in general that women must make sure they do not “provoke wrong actions” by their male counterparts in domestic violence situations.

So, really, ESPN, what Simmons said was THREE TIMES worse than that? No wonder the hashtag #FreeSimmons was the top trending term in the United States last night on Twitter.

Lance Armstrong denied it and denied it, but he eventually came clean: yes, he cheated to win every Tour de France.

Marianne Faithfull: My Ex Killed Jim Morrison!

Singer-songwriter Marianne Faithfull says in an interview with Mojo magazine this month that Jim Morrison’s 1971 death was not an accident.

In fact, she claims, the star’s Parisian bathtub demise was a murder.

One that her ex-boyfriend Jean de Breteuil was responsible for.

Marianne and Jim

Now 67, Faithfull recalled that fateful night after she had traveled to France with de Breteuil, a heroin dealer whose clients included high-profile celebs.

They went to Morrison’s Paris apartment, at 17 Rue Beautreillis.

“I could intuitively feel trouble,” Faithfull recalled, resulting in her taking “a few Tuinal” and conking out. “He went to see Jim Morrison and killed him.”

“I mean I’m sure it was an accident. Poor bastard.”

So … it was an accidental drug overdose murder?

“The smack was too strong? Yeah. And he died.”

“And I didn’t know anything about this. Anyway, everybody connected to the death of this poor guy is dead now. Except me.”

While conspiracy theories regarding his death keep thriving, French authorities decided to skip the autopsy as no foul play was believed to be suspected.

As for the fate of Jean de Breiteuil?

The former dealer died of an overdose that same year. “He was a horrible guy, someone who crawled out from under a stone,” Faithfull recalled.

“What I liked about him was that he had one yellow eye and one green eye,” she says. “And he had a lot of dope. It was all about drugs and sex.”

Faithfull also drew parallels between Morrison another fallen music legend, Amy Winehouse, who also died of drug and alcohol issues at the age of 27.

Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away at the age of 46. He was found with a needle in his arm and had a history of drug abuse.

U.S. Women’s Soccer Team: Golden!!!

It took a last-second goal by Alex Morgan to send the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team into its Gold Medal matchup against Japan, but no such heroics were required to earn the Yanks a revenge-filled victory today:

Yes, we did! By a score of 2-1, America took down the team that shocked us in last summer’s World Cup finals.

Soccer Team

Carli Lloyd scored in the eighth and 54th minutes of the game, with Yuki Ogimi netting a shot in the 63rd minute, and the U.S. held on for the prize it had been aiming for over the past two weeks.

An Olympic record crowd for women’s soccer (80,203) at Wembley Stadium watched Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and company pile on to each other when the final whistle sounded, as bars and offices across the county broke out into chants and toasts just a few moments ago.

Canada, meanwhile, defeated France earlier in the day to earn the Bronze.

Rep Shoots Down Chris Brown/Rihanna Reunion Rumors

There is nothing there.

That’s the word today from a Chris Brown representative, who has been forced to come out and officially shoot down talk that this singer is spending time with Rihanna in Cannes at the moment. Reports have even said both partied it up on Magic Johnson’s yacht.

Snow BeachRihanna in England

Rumors of the pair at least hanging out together first cropped up because each has been spotted in France over the past couple days.

But Rihanna is in the area on vacation, while Brown is there for work and is even accompanied by girlfriend Karrueche Tran.

“People are trying to connect them,” Brown’s rep tells E! News. “Chris is there to shoot a video for Swizz Beatz and with Luda.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time buzz has circulated around Brown and Rihanna secretly hooking up. It likely won’t be the last time, either.

THG Asks: Is Tupac Shakur Really Dead?

THG Asks!

Welcome to THG Asks, a feature in which two of THG’s celebrity gossip experts debate topical issues in the entertainment world and you decide who wrote the winning argument!

Today, THG Asks: Is Tupac Shakur really dead?

YES. By Hilton Hater

Tupac Shakur once wondered, “I Wonder If Heaven’s Got a Ghetto.”

And the truth, no matter how badly you want to believe otherwise, is that the iconic rapper now knows for certain. He’s gone. Deceased. Deader than Lindsay Lohan’s movie career.

I know, I know: eight albums have been released since Tupac was shot in 1996. And that Tupac hologram at Coachella really did seem life-like.

But no credible source has ever reported a Tupac sighting. University Medical Center, one of the most respected hospitals in the country, pronounced him dead six days after he was gunned down in Las Vegas. Why would those doctors lie?

It can be hard to let go. But Life Goes On, Tupac once rapped to his fans. He’d want you to accept his fate, keep ya head up and be real to your women.

NO. By Free Britney

The Notorious B.I.G.’s posthumous album was titled Life After Death.

Many at Coachella feel they saw Biggie’s arch rival, Tupac Shakur, experience this over the weekend. It’s a great story … except 2Pac is not really dead.

First off, Tupac’s “death” in 1996 was too perfectly orchestrated and replete with too many biblical and numerological references to be simply coincidental.

The motives behind the fake murder are unclear – to avoid going to jail, or drum up sales for Death Row, or be reincarnated as Makaveli? – but the killing was staged.

It also remains unsolved. How convenient.

Second of all, the “hologram” of Tupac performing was 100 times more realistic than any hologram known to man. There’s no way that wasn’t a human being.

Think about it. If you could make holograms that cool, why wouldn’t we see them in our daily lives, walking around left and right? It doesn’t make any sense.

It does make for a media conspiracy. That “hologram” is just media telling us that it’s fake because he’s still the most wanted motherf–ker in America.

THG Asks you … is Pac really dead?

Dark Tide Movie Trailer: Just Released!

Over the last few weeks, Halle Berry’s personal life has dominated any news about this actress, as she battles for full custody of her daughter with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.

But the gorgeous star actually has a new movie coming out later this year. It’s titled Dark Tides and it co-stars her fiance, Olivier Martinez.

The thriller features Berry and Martinez as a couple who goes deep sea diving… only to come across a “nightmare from the deep still lurking” in the sea, according to the film’s official synopsis. A bit cheesy and predictable? Sure. But don’t you wanna see how these two fell in love?

Halle Berry Fleeing U.S. Due to Death Threats?

Halle Berry does not want to move to France with young daughter Nahla and fiance Olivier Martinez to spite Gabriel Aubry – she fears for her life, according to reports.

TMZ reports that Halle is motivated by security in asking a judge for permission to move to France with Nahla – something Gabriel Aubry is trying to block.

There have apparently been serious threats to Halle’s life – from one man in particular – and she feels the move out of the country is a life or death situation.

Halle Berry Close Up

Robert Hoskins, a mentally unstable man, escaped from a mental institution last week and has made threats against Halle, specifically to “slit her throat.”

Hoskins threatened to slit Madonna’s throat in the past and was actually shot by her bodyguard in 1995 after he trespassed onto the pop star’s property.

As if that weren’t enough, another stalker who recently trespassed onto Halle’s property multiple times in the past has just been released from jail.

Halle is particularly concerned because Starmaps and some Hollywood bus tours literally take tourists to her doorstep, and it freaks her out.

The actress is also concerned that Gabriel Aubry, Nahla’s father, is parading in front of paparazzi almost daily and possibly putting her at risk.

A judge has yet to rule on her request to skip town.

Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau: Too Young to Model?

Sorry for ever questioning your racy spreads, Kendall Jenner. Compare to Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau, you’re a senior citizen!

Blondeau is a 10-year girl from France who has made headline this month for her pictorial in that nation’s version of Vogue. As you can see below, in pictures first released by Good Morning America, the child isn’t simply smiling for the publication; she’s striking a rather adult pose:

But Blondeau’s doesn’t see the big deal. A fashion designer, Veronika Loubry told a French newspaper about the scandal: “The only thing that shocks me about the photo is the necklace that she’s wearing, which is worth 3 million Euros.”

Should she be more shocked? Is there simply a culture clash here and things are different in Europe? What do you think of Blondeau’s spread? Is she too young to model?

Lady Gaga: Bald, Performing "Hair" Live in UK

Lady Gaga bald? Just when you thought you’d seen everything.

The singer recently opted to go cue ball style for a live performance of (ironically) “Hair” on the UK’s Paul O’Grady Show. Bald is beautiful, indeed!

The Mother Monster hung up her wig (literally, on a mannequin atop her piano, in front of her) for this rendition of the track from Born This Way.

There was still plenty of “Hair,” just not on her dome. Lady Gaga opted to wear it as her outfit as a hairy teal dress. Check it out in the clip below …
